Based on resolver’s experience to date, an off peak ticket usually comes with certain conditions of travel, especially if you are travelling on a particularly busy route. It should be made clear to you what these conditions are at the time of purchase eg. restricted times or routes. The chances are that if you try and board a train that does not fall within the restrictions, the ticket inspector on the gate will not let you board. If you do manage to board the wrong train, you are liable to have to pay a penalty fare or at least be charged the full price of a ticket – basically treated as if you had boarded without a ticket at all. If you are lucky, the ticket inspector may ask you to pay the difference to upgrade your ticket to a ‘peak’ one, but this is by no means a given.

If you feel that this was not made clear to you when you purchased the ticket and you were therefore unaware of the restrictions, resolver recommends that you submit your concern in writing to the train company concerned. If you are not happy with the response you receive, your next port of call is either London Travelwatch at enquiries@londontravelwatch.org.uk (for the London area) or Passenger Focus at advice@passengerfocus.org.uk (for outside London). resolver can assist you in submitting, recording and reminding you when and who to escalate to.
