A membership-based healthcare scheme are discretionary schemes set up for use by scheme members. All the members pay in to the Scheme to provide cover when it's needed for each other.

These schemes are discretionary because each case will be looked at on an individual basis to see what help is right for that member. To make sure decisions are fair, schemes will often have rules that guide which treatments are covered and what's not. But unlike private medical insurance, there is a simple membership price and no 'hidden' extras or payments.

However, unlike health insurance, these schemes are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and so do not provide access to the Financial Ombudsman Service for escalation of unresolved complaints.
