It is often better to claim for lost luggage or damaged luggage on your insurance than from the airline, as an airline will only pay a minimal amount of compensation, if any at all. If you do find that your baggage has been lost, you need to report it immediately to the baggage desk in the baggage claims area where you will most likely be given a Property Irregularity Report. This can provide evidence for a future insurance claim, or for a claim against the airline.
In order to make a claim against the airline for lost or damaged luggage, you should write to the airline setting out what remedy you are seeking (e.g. compensation). You should also enclose a value for the damaged bag and any contents - ideally a receipt for its purchase. Airlines will make a payment based on the value of the bag and its contents, although they are likely to depreciate this payment somewhat for the age of the bag. You should note that different airlines will have different ceilings for the value of compensation they will award for lost bags.
You should note that all claims against airlines for lost or damaged property must be made within seven days.
